It's been a while now since the season 5 Game of Thrones finale but for some of us, the shock and questions remain. The show was brilliant as ever this time round, I couldn’t help but applaud how these characters have coped with what has been a rollercoaster season. Yes, things may have started out slow but the mind games and seeds which were planted in the early days led to a dramatic climax which I’m still trying to get my head round. Funnily enough, some of the characters (hate them or love them) have displayed traits which are as useful in the business landscape of 2015 as they are in Westeros… Also, spoiler alert!
A mentor can take you places
The Stark children sure have some great mentors throughout the series, even if their methods cause you to raise an eyebrow (or two). Look at what the Hound taught Arya about combat and how her fighting skills improved during her time with him and I’m still marvelling at her learning at the hands of Jaqen H’ghar. Sansa would not be holding her resolve as Ramsey Bolton’s bride if it weren’t for Littlefinger’s influence. Her strength is astounding in the face of the torture she’s enduring.
Lesson: Having someone on your side to guide you will give you a confidence boost and a teacher in one! A mentor can also identify strengths and skills you didn’t know you had and help you harness this to create success. Next stop- Braavos to join the Faceless Men!
Disrespecting your allies is never good for business
Do you experience delusions of grandeur and act like you’re better than others? No, of course you wouldn’t admit it but don’t be surprised if this behaviour comes back to bite you. Cersei was essentially running the show at King’s Landing until she let her power trip get the better of her. She was cold and aloof with even her most loyal allies; cutting them off and shutting out those who raised concerns and look what happened there…
Lesson: Don’t annoy your network or shut people out. Take time to nurture and grow relationships with people who will celebrate your successes but will also be there if things aren’t going well (like being thrown in a cell by the Sparrows!)
Surround yourself with a team who would kill for you, not kill you
Despite her dragons and all the things which have fans hoping to see the Khaleesi on the Iron Throne, Daenerys doesn’t always make great decisions. As a leader, her choices shouldn’t leave us groaning and scratching our heads every episode. Just look at who's become her latest advisor; Tyrion. He only recently joined the party and is still to earn her complete trust and respect, oh and he’s from a family who want her dead. You need to have a team you can trust, work out what makes them tick and be sure you’re on the same page as far as goals are concerned. If you can’t rely on your guys to bring their A-game when you need it, say goodbye.
Lesson: As a leader you have to trust your team in order to delegate, support and knowledge share. It may take time to get to know the people you spend 9-5 with but the effort is worthwhile.
